Hard to swallow

A friend at work has been writing an article about industrial use of metals (fun fun fun), for which she had to interview someone from a cutlery manufacturer.

She was told:

The average person in the UK consumes two to three pieces of cutlery per year.

Somebody out there must be eating an awful lot of spoons to be making that average up, because I'm pretty sure I eat none.

Although I have never partaken of cutlery myself (should you use a soup spoon to eat a fish knife with? Or is it the other way round?) or seen anybody else do it, this dubious 'fact' would explain why the canteen at work always runs out of knives.
