Oh, yes

I’m currently responsible for compiling the geography, London Underground and (inevitably) politics rounds for a forthcoming office quiz night. In my research, I’ve come across a real treat of a quote that I’d somehow never seen before.

Which prime minister said: “I can’t stop people sleeping with other people if they ought not”?

No googling, please – it ain’t tricky…

It looks like a Majorism to me, Tom. It would not sound right coming from Thatcher's or Tony's mouth.

Full marks to Mr O'D! The irony value and the slightly archaic diction ("they ought not") should have helped. A specially engraved prize grey traffic cone is on its way.

It's from his accidentally recorded chat with Michael Brunson in 1993 and was overshadowed by the "three more of the bastards" remark that was also taped.

With hindsight, I think this is the more striking extract.
