Tactical memo, FAO the Labour Party

Attacking the Lib Dems for their links to the Tories is the thing most likely to make them bind themselves closer together. If there are going to be splits, these have to grow from within.

True Tom, but it wouldn't hurt to help these cracks develop!

Emphasising the closeness of the two parties might be a better tactic.

That would effectively remove the Lib Dems as a credible political force. All Labour have to do then is focus on the pain caused by "Tory" cuts and present themselves as the kinder alternative.

The thing that the Tories always seem to have understood - and the thing that constantly eludes us - is that life is a lot easier if you get other people to do your attacking for you.

Where is our 'Tax Payers Alliance'?

I do sometimes suspect that the left is largely a vanity project. It's more important to be seen to do something than to actually do it.

In that case Paulie, you should have come to the LC Blog Nation event - because that's exactly why I did it :)

(to do something, not just talk, that is)

Tom - agree completely.

Sorry Sunny. Couldn't do it. An unmoveable prior engagement.

What does it gain the Labour Party if the Lib Dems split? The tactical boost to the Labour Party comes when as many Liberal Democrats as possible are implicated in supporting and implementing nasty Tory attacks on the less well-off.

Not sure a Lib Dem Split is what's being tried for. It's the support of disenchanted voters that is up for grabs. A Lib Dem party united around a Coalition that clobbers the poor is going to get what they deserve, frankly.
